Cross-walking the two most widely used frameworks becomes relatively straightforward, especially when you use the OECD version (John, De Fruyt 2015) that clusters the Big Five factors into three categories.ACT, Inc. These things teachers care most about can immediately be found in either of the two popular frameworks. Remember my wife: what she and her colleagues work toward every single day with their students are kindness and helpfulness, staying calm and cool under pressure, and persistence and organization. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), for instance, uses the BFF frequently in its educational and economic studies, such as the new “ Study of Social Emotional Skills.“ĭoes it matter whether you choose the CASEL quintet or the Big Five Factor framework to guide and inform your SEL programming? Well, we at ACT can certainly make a compelling case for the value of the Big Five framework, and why it has a great evidence-basis in psychological research, and has been established as having wide impact on success in schooling, careers, and life.īut if your school uses the CASEL framework, it doesn’t mean you can’t also use Tessera. It also features a quintet of skills: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.Īlthough the CASEL framework has a strong appeal in the US, the BFF is widely referenced internationally. In the US today, where the conversation about SEL is more elevated than it has ever been before, the CASEL framework is often referenced. The Big Five Factors, identified after many years of research and analysis, are these: Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Emotional Stability, Openness, and Extraversion.įor our SEL assessment, ACT Tessera™, we’ve re-named the Big Five Factors with labels more widely used by educators, parents and policymakers. (I discuss this in step 2 of my recent ACT e-book, Eight Steps to Strengthening SEL in Your School or District).Īfter much research and consideration, ACT has chosen a framework known as the Big Five Factors (BFF) for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) assessments, and the ACT® Holistic Framework™. School systems-at whatever level, be it global, national, state, district, school, or classroom-ought to be clear with themselves and their community about their commitments to student learning, especially in the social and emotional areas, so clarifying and communicating widely their particular common terminology is very valuable. They use commonplace descriptors: kind and helpful calm and cool and persistent and organized. She and her colleagues discuss and reflect upon this part of their work every single day-but they hardly ever use formal or technical terms for what they are describing as their hopes for student behaviors, and they don’t really give much attention to what researcher might determine is the “right” way to organize or label these behaviors. She doesn’t need any research-based evidence to know that her job is made considerably easier-and her students learn more effectively and efficiently-when her students are supporting each other during classroom activities, when they are staying calm and not getting angry or upset, when they set goals and don’t give up, and when they make good choices about handling the difficult decisions that come your way when you are 13 in the year 2018. Her primary job is introducing 13-year-olds to solving linear equations and applying quadratic functions (and I dare readers here to take on such a project on a daily basis!). Due to the overwhelming response to our upcoming Jesus Revolution baptism at Pirate's Cove Beach, we have moved the baptism to Saturday, July 8, at 8:00 AM. "Guess what? We're doing a 'Jesus Revolution' baptism right here at Pirates Cove!" As noted above, that baptism is now taking place on July 8. This is where thousands of other people were baptized as well, and you saw it in the 'Jesus Revolution' film," Laurie announced in a recent video. This is where my wife Cathe was baptized. Just like the big kids dealing with production committees do. That means using digital to save time, compromising on the in-betweens, and sleeping under the desk. Heck, we even have a producer (and that, to be sure, is effectively what Sayaka is) to remind the animators of that. I guess even high schoolers making self-promotion reels have to deal with the same quandary the pros do – that occlusion zone where perfectionism and principle meets budgetary and chronological reality. The process itself is an interesting canvas to an extent, it’s true. That seems to me very much what Eizouken itself is, except the kids making it are young-at-heart grown-ups and they have the added bonus that the anime they’re making for the love of it is about making anime for the love of it. You have a group of kids (basically a duo, really) making an anime with no plot just for the love of the process. I continue to see a lot of irony – intentional or otherwise – in what’s happening on screen. The contrarian in me dislikes that for starters, but it’s a bad road to go down generally speaking. That said, we’re starting to get to a point with the anime I’ve seen a few times before, where any criticism of it is treated as heresy. Without the sound effects, the music, Itou Sairi’s performance, and most of all the animated fantasy sequences where is the appeal here? It’s not like the manga has ever been hugely popular or even that well-reviewed, but it’s a minor miracle someone saw enough in it to publicly suggest that Yuasa Masaaki should adapt it (and the rest is history). Four episodes into Eizouken ni wa Te o Dasu na! the thought that keeps running through my head is, how the heck did this ever work as a manga? To a larger extent than with almost any adaptation I can remember, this series’ charms seem overwhelmingly to spring from what the adaptation brings to it. If you decide you want to paint your windows in the future, you are unable to change the grid color - only the window frame itself, assuming you have a paintable product. With the grids in between the panes of glass, you are stuck with the color you choose. Internal window grids require a less specialized installation technique and fewer materials, making the overall window investment less than external grilles. It's like cleaning a window without grilles-while still enjoying the stylish gridded appearance. Since the dividers are situated between the window panes, you can easily clean your entire window's glass surface in one fluid motion. Windows with internal grids are effortless to clean, especially when compared to external window grilles. If you have a hunch that internal window grilles may be the best investment for your home, here are some advantages and disadvantages of this window style for you to consider. SDLs divide your glass into smaller sections, requiring you to wash and dry each window pane individually. Perhaps the most notable disadvantage of external window grilles is their time-consuming cleaning requirements. Plus, the grilles are applied to both sides of your window, requiring double the materials and therefore, double the cost. These windows require the manufacturer spends more time ensuring the grids are in perfect alignment. Con: Higher InvestmentĮxternal grilles are typically more of an investment than internal grids. So, should you decide you want to change your window color in the future, you have the flexibility to paint the grids as well since they are on the outside of the glass. Windows with external grilles can be painted - assuming you have a paintable window product like fiberglass. You can choose thin muntin bars for a sleek, contemporary look or thicker muntins for a vintage style with timeless elegance. Homeowners looking to elevate their home's appearance with charm and character will love the traditional look of external window grids. Gridded windows are a popular feature for historic homes, and grid patterns can vary, from classic rectangular to modern cottage, to perfectly match your home's style. Window grids, also called grilles or muntins, divide your window's glass into sections with partitions of wood, vinyl, fiberglass, or other materials. What's the Difference Between Internal and External Window Grids? But first-let's take a look at what makes each of these window types unique. We've created this helpful list sharing the advantages and disadvantages of internal and external window grids to help make your decision easier. If you've chosen the timeless look of gridded windows for your home, you're likely debating whether to install windows with external grilles or internal grids. Selecting the perfect window style for your home can be daunting-especially when there are so many materials, colors, and finishes to choose from! I was like, “You’ve gotta record this, man! Look at this! This is crazy!” So, I convinced him to, and he took out his phone and recorded some video. You don’t feel any pain, right when your arm breaks open, so I was just like, “Oh, my god! Jesus, sorry! I’m okay!” (Director) Dave ran up and was like, “Are you okay?!,” and he was terrified. They were really, really upset and worried that it happened, but I was flooded with adrenalin, right when it happened. Basically, I ended up going through the rear window of a taxi cab and getting 31 stitches. So, he broke through our cones and the cops, and double-parked right in the middle of where we were shooting. In New York City, you have the United Nations, so there’s diplomats driving around and they can break the law. To make a long story short, a diplomat broke through our lock-up. It was a perfect storm of a lot of things all going wrong, at once. I should start off by saying that everyone on the set, from the director on down, was very safety conscious. GORDON-LEVITT: There was a bit of an accident. Then, I realized that they’re all tied together. In the past, when I saw bike messengers, I would just see them as individuals. RAMIREZ: There’s a genuine respect that they have for one another. There’s a real culture and ethic around messengers, but also just people who are into bikes and that ride bikes. GORDON-LEVITT: What stood out to me was the sense of community. What most surprised you about bike culture and bike messengers? The training was actually completely different than doing an action film, where you can just go in and do your action sequences. You had to get your scene across and still be going really fast, in the midst of being in the middle of New York City. So, a lot of the training that we did – and we trained for six weeks prior to actually going to New York City and training there – was just a lot of endurance ‘cause you couldn’t run out of breath. We had all the dialogue, while we were riding bikes. RAMIREZ: You have to take into consideration that this is a film where, most of the movie, we’re riding bikes. And riding a bike around New York City, all summer, sounded just like the perfect thing. 50/50 is a movie about a guy fighting cancer, who’s body is giving up on him, and this was a character who was very strong and confident in his body. JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT: I was in the middle of shooting 50/50, the first time that I read the script for Premium Rush, and it was very different. So, I had to go in and audition, and then they brought me back to do a chemistry read with Joe. But, at the time, Joe was attached to star in it, and I knew that David Koepp was directing, and I was a fan of his writing, in the past. Question: How did you each get involved with this film? Was it brought to you, or had you been looking to do a straight-action film?ĭANIA RAMIREZ: For me, when my agents and reps send me a script, I read it through, just for the story purpose of it, and then I read it again to think of my character and see if it’s something that I’m interested in bringing to life. Check out what they had to say after the jump. Gordon-Levitt also talked about his feature directorial debut Don Jon’s Addiction, what makes Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg both such amazing filmmakers, and what’s up next for his production company, Hit Record. But, when his last envelope of the day becomes more than he bargained for, a routine run turns into a life or death chase through the streets of Manhattan.Īt the film’s press day, Collider participated in both a press conference and 2-on-1 interview with co-stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dania Ramirez, who talked about what attracted them to the project, the level of confidence you have to have in order to be a successful bike messenger, what surprised them most about bike culture, how much of the stunts they actually got to do themselves, and working with Michael Shannon as a crazed villain. Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is the best in New York, dodging speeding cars, crazed cabbies and inconsiderate pedestrians, all to make a delivery to its proper destination. Premium Rush is a high-adrenalin action thriller set in the world of bike messengers.
